Why is activated carbon used in aquaristics?
We all know that the fish in our aquarium produce poisonous ammonium, which is processed into relatively non-toxic nitrates by bacteria that live in the filter material. There are other pollutants in much smaller quantities that are generated by the living processes in our aquarium and that over a period of time can build up enough to have an effect on the aquarium inhabitants. A faint, yellowish turbidity in the water is an indicator of the presence of at least one such pollutant. The most important function of activated carbon is to remove these impurities before they reach levels high enough to cause stress or damage to the aquarium inhabitants' organs.
Activated carbon also performs other important functions, such as removing soluble toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methane that result from poor water circulation. It acts as a catalyst for the rapid conversion of chlorine gas into harmless hydrogen chloride. Makes water crystal clear by absorbing tiny solids that are too small to be caught by the filter wool. Helps protect aquarium inhabitants from accidental exposure to toxic chemicals such as pesticides, solvents, cleaning agents, nicotine, and more.
